Getting married in the EPiscopal church

What to expect…

The Episcopal Church views marriage as a sacred covenant, deeply rooted in faith. Couples typically begin by meeting with a priest to discuss their relationship and the significance of their commitment before God and the community. This initial meeting helps establish a genuine connection with their spiritual leader and can guide couples through the process, including premarital counseling, which often encourages honest conversations about expectations, values, and goals in married life.

At least one of the parties must be a baptized Christian (any denomination), the ceremony must be attested by at least two witnesses, and the marriage must conform to the laws of the State.

Prior to the marriage, the couple signs a declaration of intention which states that they hold marriage to be a lifelong union, and they complete the marriage preparation course together, which explores the couple’s strengths, growing edges and their spirituality around marriage.

The church allows for various types of ceremonies, whether in a traditional church setting or a more personal venue, ensuring that the wedding reflects the couple’s unique identity. Additionally, the Episcopal liturgy provides beautiful readings, prayers, and blessings that enrich the ceremony, giving it a truly uplifting atmosphere.

Our clergy are also available for Renewal of Vows or a Blessing of a Marriage for those already married by a civil ceremony.
