Celebrating St. Francis: A Blessing for Our Beloved Animals
We had beautiful weather for our annual Blessing of the Animals! Following Sunday’s late service, we gathered our furry companions in the courtyard to receive a blessing from Father David. This tradition dates back to St. Francis of Assisi, a Christian friar who lived in the 12th and 13th centuries, devoted his life to serving others and caring for creation. Today, we honor him as the patron saint of animals and the environment. Each year, churches celebrate his feast day on October 4th with a special blessing for pets and their families. His example reminds us that caring for the world around us is an important part of living out our faith.
During the blessing, we give thanks for the love, comfort, and joy our animal companions bring into our lives. We also ask God to protect them and remind ourselves to care for all living things. A heartfelt thank-you to Fr. David Manley for his gentle and patient touch with these beloved family members, and for making the day special for pets and their people.
We hope you’ll join us next year! You don’t have to be an Episcopalian or a church member to participate—everyone is welcome! Bring your furry, feathered, or other beloved companions to St. Matthew’s as we celebrate the wonderful gifts of God’s creation together.
